Philosophy of Therapy

On Freeing Ourselves

We humans are beings of habit. As problematic as certain habits can be, they are also comforting and familiar. There's an efficiency in automatically thinking in a certain way or doing something in a particular way, the same way we've done it a thousand times before. We're often not even aware that we're doing it. We adopted these ways of interacting in the world years ago because they served a purpose. They were useful to us. But while these automatic patterns were initially adaptive, they can later enslave us. They have long outserved their usefulness.

When our habitual reactions no longer work or create negative consequences, it's time for a change. When we automatically think worse case scenario and get ourselves worked up about an imaginary outcome that hasn’t and probably won’t even happen, when we impulsively reach for a drink or too much food when we feel stressed or when we lash out in anger when we feel a buildup of tension, we may temporarily feel relief, but at what cost? Cost to ourselves? To our loved ones? Over time, the costs of an unskillful habit far outweigh the benefits.

As humans, we face many challenges, all with the intention of giving us opportunities to learn and grow. But we often get stuck in unskillful patterns and destructive feedback loops, so that rather than finding clarity and wisdom, we dig ourselves deeper in a painful rut.

Dr. Satz has techniques and insights that will teach you how to work with these habits to transform them into new patterns that are more representative of who you are today and what your true potential is. You will find relief from your suffering and have more choices. No more being stuck in the past.

On Expanding our Awareness

The nature of being human is that we have a personal perspective. It's not that our perspective isn't legitimate, it is. But it is incomplete. It is only one slice of a much larger whole.

Do you remember the old parable of the blind men and the elephant? Each one was seeking to explain what an elephant was. One man felt the side of the elephant and exclaimed, "The elephant is like a wall!" Another felt the tusk and argued that the elephant was like a spear. Another grabbed the elephant's squirming trunk and decided that an elephant was like a snake. Another man felt the knee of the elephant and believed the beast to be like a tree. The fifth man felt the ear of the elephant and marveled how like a fan an elephant was. The last man felt the elephant's swinging tail and concluded an elephant was like a rope. Each argued that the way he described the elephant was the correct way. And yet none was fully correct and equally, each was partially correct.

And this is how it goes in life. The more we come from our small, personal perspective, the more narrow and limited and therefore distorted our interpretations will be.

But the opposite is also very much the case. The larger our viewpoint is, the more representative our understanding is of what's going on and why something is happening and the larger our field of options is. The more choices we have, the better we feel and the better the outcome.

Dr. Satz will help you enlarge your perspective, both in terms of how to understand a difficult situation and how to handle it successfully. The result is that you will have far greater choices that fit with the person you are today and your life will transform in wonderfully positive ways.
